Safety sleeping at Cracker Barrel and Walmart

Hello. I am passing through houston but plan to spend some time here to enjoy the city. Typically I just sleep in my van at Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations then shower at a local gym. Is this a bad idea in Houston? I hear crime is really bad here but most of the Cracker Barrel’s are located outside of downtown, would I be safe at these locations? Thanks.
