Safe area apartment complex with lower rent budget recommendations!

My mom and I are moving out together. I will be a first time renter but we are prioritizing safety as we are two small ladies, and our budget for a two bedroom two bath is max $1200/month which from what I’ve seen seems to give me not the best areas in houston. My mom wants to be closer to her job which is within Alief. Any recommendations on good apartments for this price? I’ve lost count at how many apartments I’ve looked into with apartments.com and even just looking at google maps, the reviews make me nervous, how do I weigh my options here and consider an apartment with bad complaints on the reviews? Any tips and advice helps pls!
