Safe apartments close to Baylor College of Medicine?

I am moving to Houston from Canada and will be doing research at Baylor College. I will not have a car immediately so being close is a must (will consider getting a car as soon as we arrive).

Every apartment I look at, however, seems to have horrible ratings (mainly security issues and bad apartment management). I currently am out of the country and will not able to visit anywhere before I make a decision.

I also have 2 kids so safety is top priority. I need a 2 bedroom and will have a budget of $1600/month. Any suggestions to where I should live or avoid? Thank you very much.
