Request: Stray Dog / Animal Control Advice

A very sweet stray dog followed me home last night and I would like to take it to a shelter instead of let it wander the streets. BARC only accepts dogs by appointment but has no appointments available. Is this right? What do people do with stray dogs? I’m going to try the SPCA when they open at 11:00, although keeping the dog all morning is not ideal either.
