replace vs repair roof?

We are closing on a house and know there was a potential problem with the roof from inspection. It is 15 years old roof. There's an area of 'water staining' seen in the attic in the decking, and about 1 foot circle of moisture on one of the 2nd floor ceilings that may be related. I've never had roof work done. I'm planning to get a couple quotes. I'm thinking if a repair is less than $5k I should do that and try for another 5 years of life in the roof.
