Renter question: is it illegal to badmouth a complex
Hi all, Posting this here because I wanted local feedback but will remove if I need to.
In Texas, is it illegal to badmouth or speak negatively/dissuade someone from renting from a complex?
Asking because this happened today and I wasn’t sure what to make of it and got a little scared.
I am having some troubles with my leasing office and was waiting to talk to them today. As I was waiting, another women walked in and made a comment about the bad customer service here. I pipped up as I agreed and asked her whether she was moving in or already lived here. She replied that she lived here and was moving out. To that I said “Oh ok, good. I was going to say, leaser beware!”
The leasing office manager or assistant manager then confronted us and asked me aggressively what I had said. The other women replied that we weren’t talking to him and he said “Oh no it’s ok. I heard you (my name), I heard what you just said.”
It freaked me out a bit. I read in my lease that tenants couldn’t do anything that threatened the leasing staff but wasn’t sure if this counted or qualified as something else that could get me in trouble.
