Remodeled without a permit
As the title states, my fiance and I recently moved into our first home in late September/October. All my life I always thought that permits were for outside of the house since living in a hot state, everyone wants a covered patio/deck. I never knew it was for INSIDE of the house too. I genuinely thought it was just if the exterior of the house structure was changed but you can do as you please on the inside.
When we moved in, we knocked down a wall in the kitchen to create an open concept into the living room. We put in new backsplash, counter tops, took out old and outdated appliances and put in all new Samsung appliances and took off the texture of the walls for a flat, smooth finish and painted throughout. We did this thinking we’d greatly improve the value of our home.
We got the letter from Houston Appraisal district to voluntarily add any information of the home: contract price, sale price, upgrades etc for accurate up to date information. I’d asked my sister in Dallas if she’d gotten one to (I thought it was because of the new state law that passed for 100k off etc) but she mentioned to include my permits. I said what permit?
Sure enough I look online and saw that Houston requires it for inside the house too.
Now I don’t know what to do; we plan on selling in a couple of years for something bigger (God Willing) but I want to tackle this issue now.
Any guidance ?
