Relocating from scotland!

I posted this in r/expats and was surprised by the response I got, somebody recommended posting here. For consistency sake I have kept the post exactly the same.

A job opportunity has came up for me and its looking like myself, my wife, my two young kids and my dog will all be relocating to Houston! I want to get a bit of an idea on certain aspects of living there and if any other expats have advice for me! What's a realistic expectation for monthly bills over there? I will be earning 81k plus overtime but I'm unsure as to what my monthlies will look like or what a sensible rent amount is. What are nice areas? The work will be in La Porte too so I wouldn't want too far a drive! My wife has suggested a gated community type place as she isn't a confident driver and so would want to stay somewhere with plenty for the kids etc but any suggestions are welcomed. My dog is high energy, when it's too hot for walks what do people do? Are there dog walking places (inside) for through the day or do you try get all the energy out early morning and late evenings? Are there any communities that would have kids clubs etc? Or is it really a necessity for my wife to have a car?

I think that's all my current questions but please add to that if there's anything you think wr need to know!
