Recommendations for medical traveler to Houston?
I’m visiting MD Anderson for a week at the end of this month. This is my third visit but the first time coming alone and first time staying for a week that didn’t involve me being in the hospital for most of that time. I’m also expecting to be staying for more than a month in March for additional procedures.
I realize Houston is not the most walkable city but how realistic is it for me to do a bit of exploring without a car, using transit, Uber and walking?
I’d like to revisit the Rothko Chapel and finish seeing the gems and minerals collection at the Museum of Natural Science. I’ve visited both in the past but was not well enough to fully enjoy them. I’d also like to enjoy some good food, which I also haven’t been able to experience on previous trips because I was unwell.
I’ll be staying at a hotel close to the hospital but I’m typically someone who likes to be adventurous and go exploring.
I’d love some recommendations on areas to explore that might be accessible by transit and on foot, or perhaps an area with enough stuff nearby to justify the cost and traffic time of an Uber. I’d also love some recommendations on specific places to eat and things to see and do.
I’m open to almost anything. I like museums, shops, galleries, parks with walking/hiking trails, walking through residential neighborhoods with interesting houses, cafes, cool landmarks, any type of food, and live entertainment (theater, music, symphony/opera, lectures, or comedy).
I’m generally not into sports, bars and nightclubs, malls (unless there’s a spectacular outlet mall with great deals) and chain stores/restaurants — unless they’re a local chain.
Thank you!
