recommendations for car options for 6-8 month stay in Houston?

I have had some trouble getting a car for my stay here. Have looked at some "subscription" services, Key roadblocks are: – duration is 6-8 months – no Texas license (for now) – not really willing to buy a new car with cash for the short duration.
