Rarity of a good rookie QB
I was looking at top 10 wins by a qb since 2000, and so many were either not starters as rookies, or had notoriously bad rookie seasons
Tom Brady – 251 wins – ❌
Drew Brees – 172 wins – ❌
Peyton Manning – 172 wins – ❌
Ben Roethlisberger – 166 wins – ✅
Aaron Rodgers – 152 wins – ❌
Philip Rivers – 137 wins – ❌
Matt Ryan – 124 wins – ✅
Eli Manning – 118 wins – ❌
Russell Wilson – 115 wins – ✅
Brett Favre – 104 wins – ❌
Then you have recent guys like Mahomes, Allen, Purdy.
If I was a coach, I feel I would do what the patriots are doing, and not allow my rookie to start, even if he’s the best option. They need to learn to read defenses, how to land, how to slide, how to change plays at the line of scrimmage, how to watch film, and many qb’s say they needed to bulk up after their rookie year.
What CJ, Herbert, Dak, RG3, Newton, Mayfield have done is so outside the norm!
