Prospective new resident – looking for information!

Hello all!

I am actively combing through the search results here trying to collate information – I promise. My (36m) partner (32f) has recently received a job offer to work in Houston and we're likely going to relocate. I'm posting here today because we have roughly about 2-3 months to complete the move – something we have only found out about roughly 2-3 days ago and only yesterday decided was the best move for us. We'd be eyeing moving a little after Thanksgiving.

I grew up in New Jersey all my life and currently live in Jersey City. While I've fallen in love with this place over the last several years, I have fallen out of love with the constant squeeze on pricing. I myself am not a huge fan of being directly in the center of a large bustling city like New York and always found Jersey City to be a nice compromise of quiet but accessibility to NYC. My partner, on the other hand, lives for this. Loves cities of all types and being a part of something new, especially new communities.

We're currently eyeing apartments in the area surrounding/nearby Shell Energy Stadium (due to the proximity of her job offer), but I wanted to touch base here to see what the vibes on that neighborhood are, or if there were other suggestions nearby we should consider.

Both my partner and I are still active in sports (we both play flag football, I play just about everything in some capacity) and would likely join a social sports club/community to meet some new friends and people in general. We are both foodies and are into working out. I still enjoy going out to rave or two during the course of the year but have no idea what the edm scene in Houston is.

Any feedback or suggestions on the area, other areas, and just general Houston knowledge would be much appreciated.

This is a huge step for me and my partner, especially since our families are deeply rooted in this area. I'd likely look to return there sometime in the next few years but comparative to Jersey City living, look forward to reducing rent costs and trying to save some money on rent and banking some capital for a home purchase whenever that day comes (if we're lucky enough to afford it at that point…)

What are the major things you think we should know? Anything we should avoid or should look into?

Thanks for any help or information!
