Problems with last check

Recently, had a family member pass, and had to move to South Texas. Because of this, I had to quit (rather abruptly) to help family members and such. My former boss is being sketchy about giving the last check, trying to get some documents out of me without answering the question of when the check will come in. The documents aren't tied to my timesheet or anything, just documents for travel and mileage and such. Problem is, all the documents are on the work computer I turned in when having to leave Houston. Does any of this sound right, does he have a legal reason to hold the last check?
