Potential solution at catcher?

Reason for the question mark is because I simply don’t know if it’s been done or if it’s really even possible so I figured I’d ask here. Obviously Maldy has the entire clubhouse backing him because of what he’s able to do game plan wise and calling the game, I don’t think we have the no hitter if it wasn’t for him, but can this only be done from behind the plate?

Although I will admit his hitting has been much better, it’s still not to a comfortable level of production. At times it’s been as if we might as well not have a DH. With that said, if the Astros did in fact trade for Contreras, could maldy with his familiarity with the pitchers and the excellent game plans he comes up with not do that from the dugout as well? Can another catcher call the game just as a coach would at times? Keep maldy for the occasional start and also Contreras could fit into the DH role if Brantley needs a breather at times as well. What does everyone else think?
