Postal service delivery drivers, how did you get your job?

Everything I see says working for USPS is a easy process, and I see all sorts of young mail men/women around town, but when you go to search the website for available jobs I don't see any available in town. The only postal delivery jobs I see are "rural" where you have to provide your own vehicle, which I have, but I'm coming from an industry where I put 10s of thousands of miles a year on my vehicle and keeping a work truck on the road has been nothing short of a nightmare. Is this city really just so big that the only way your can work as a postal driver is already having family/connection who works for USPS?

I'm just getting to the point where I am regretting chasing a commissioned dollar. Something with an ok salary and government benefits would suit me just fine.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions
