Please Help With Buying Landscaping (shrubs, annuals, & perennials)

I started doing more landscaping with and for my bride. Every time I go to the store it is $100- 200.

Any tips on where to buy at lower prices than Houston Garden or Lowes? I really think they are too expensive. Is it because I am inside the loop? If go out further or is there a place within 30-40 minutes from West U? I like local business so I will drive even if to break even.
