Places Safe to Rent with Low Credit?

I’m relocating to the Houston area this month. I make decent money. My credit is not good at all… recently tanked because I fell behind on student loans. Anyway, where can I rent a place that is safe but will accept the poor credit rating? I have a child so it must be safe.
