Pit Room review

Just got back from the Pit Room. Overall I was hoping for better however it was not a wasted trip. Photos here.

The meats: The brisket was great in flavor, smoky with a good bark, but not nearly tender enough. I literally had to cut it with a knife because it would not pull apart by hand. The pork ribs were also tasty but slightly tough. If these had been my ribs, I would have smoked them for another hour or two. I have low expectations for pulled pork in Texas and this was served from a heated tub which was dissapointing, however it was actually flavorful (unexpected), and tender (expected). It had a slightly gamey flavor. The beef sausage was fantastic, with a coarse grain (which I love) and good flavor. The venison sausage was similar to the beef but with a slight venison flavor. They were out of turkey tonight so I did not try that.

The sides: Sides were good overall. The green beans were under cooked but I prefer that over mushy canned beans. The elote was good but dripping in a watery sauce and loaded with cheese. The mac and cheese was on the thin/watery side, and not very interesting. THe highlight was the potato salad with a good dill flavor and good balance overall. The BBQ sauce was the style I prefer: Not too sweet, tangy, or peppery. No dominant mustard or molasses. It was a good balance of sweet and tangy with a good black pepper element. Not too thin or thick.

What you see in the photos is $90 of food not counting tax and tip or beverages: 1 pound brisket, 1/2 pound pulled pork, 1/2 pound pork ribs, 1 link beef sausage, 1 link venison sausage, and 4 pint-sized sides. This gave us enough food for 5 hungry people.

For a well regarded BBQ place, I was hoping for more tender brisket and ribs. The meat was all flavorful and well seasoned however.
