Barbie Need Not Travel to Hyperreality

This talk contemplates the ending of the movie Barbie through the lens of Umberto Eco’s essay, “Travels in Hyperreality.” The parallels drawn are between Eco’s observations of the obsession with ‘realness’ or ‘reality’ within elaborate, outlandish constructs of American fantasy (i.e. Disneyland) and the ultimatum imposed upon “Stereotypical Barbie” at the end of the film.
