Petland is blatantly breaking Houston law

Some background, in January an anti-puppy mill law went into effect in Houston. In short, pet stores are not allowed to sell commercially raised puppies (i.e. puppies from puppy mills where a large number of dogs are kept in cages and treated like breeding machines.)

It is now late March, coming up on April, and the Petland store that is in Houston city limits STILL is selling puppies. They have been cited by the city at least three times that I know of, but get this, the fine has been just over $300. These puppies sell for $5,000-$7,000 in most instances. That little fine is just the cost of doing business for Petland.

The Mayor needs to step in and do one or both of the following:

  1. Have the city cite Petland for each individual puppy in the store so the fine is significantly higher, prompting compliance with the law.
  2. Pull Petland's certificate of occupancy since they refuse to follow the law.

If you want to save dogs from puppy mills, or simply hate when the city lets a multi-national corporation break the law when we all know full well that the rest of us will be held accountable for even the smallest infractions, then please let Mayor Turner know that the city needs to stop Petland from breaking the law. Enforce the puppy mill ordinance!
