People who live in houses that don’t have central air, how are the summers for you?

Looking for a home or townhome to rent and I’ve seen some of the older homes in montrose or the museum district showing window units. Is it rough when it’s too hot or too cold outside or not that hard to deal with? Trying to see if that is a dealbreaker or not
