People soliciting donations at intersections

On Saturday at around 4:30 PM at SW Freeway SB feeder road and Wilcrest intersection, there was a group of individuals soliciting donations for a funeral. Now, I could maybe understand a fundraiser, but donations? They even had zelle account and other payment information written on poster boards. How does someone know that's not a scam?
