Pedestrians, how do you keep yourselves safe against idiot drivers?

Some man in a Mercedes nearly killed me just now as I was walking across a crosswalk at a 4-way stop sign in Montrose. He stopped and had no turn signal on so I assumed he was going straight. I started to cross on his left side. Suddenly he guns it and veers left as if I weren't even there. If I hadn't leapt back, he would have killed me. Does anyone have any tips for protecting themselves against drivers like these? Has anyone ever gotten justice by contacting HPD?
