Pedestrian Friendly?

Is the med center / museum district pretty pedestrian friendly? I will be visiting for a few days and will be using public transportation for the first time as well as walking places for the first time – I’m used to driving everywhere. I am planning to visit the universities, some apartments, and look at the commute options to my future job.

I will admit that I’m a bit nervous because my Mom makes it sound really dangerous. This is also my first time traveling alone. Tips on that front would be appreciated as well!
