Pasadena safety

I recently rented a house in Pasadena near the Parkview/Strawberry Heights area. My partner is VERY safety conscious and used to a little bit finer digs. I am more travelled, but can be a bit naïve at times and not used to living in such a populated area. How safe would you consider it? Any precautions we should take(security systems, staying armed, not walking the dog too late, not parking the car in the driveway, etc.,)? Neither of us are from the state.
