Nu Metal/Goth Culture in Houston

I was in Houston for the Deftones concert last March (I'm not from the States), and I was amazed by how many people are into Nu Metal and goth culture (Outfits/Makeup were just like WOW). It felt like a Comic-Con, but for Nu Metal fans lol. Is this common over there?
