Never got my deposit back houston

Posting for my friend that doesn't use reddit:
I live in Houston, TX and I was living in a rental property until a couple months ago that was foreclosed on and sold at auction. When I moved out, both the new property managers and the original property managers insisted the other was responsible for returning my deposit. It has been more than the 30 days land lords have to return it here, I have asked repeatedly of both property managers. I would like to make a claim, but I am not sure who is responsible and who the claim should be against – the former or latter property manager. Does anyone know who is considered culpable in these kinds of situations? Any advice for suing to get my deposit back?
