Neighborhoods of Houston?

Could someone explain the various neighborhoods of Houston to an outsider? It's a bit overwhelming and I can't find anything decent online.

Please describe each neighborhood and what it's known for, how it's viewed by locals, danger level, things to do, proximity to downtown or other central areas. Etc.
