Navigating Houston?

We visited Houston this weekend and noticed how insane the highways and interstates can be compared to back home. I was just curious if you long timers ever have to use GPS to get around the city, or if the concrete entanglement has been second nature since an early age? Thanks in advance for any replies and we have thoroughly enjoyed our visit!
