How we came about our own version of Mukbang…

We had been playing around with the notion of video and food for a few months. Our original idea of a show about food was what I like to refer to as an Epic Fail…but as all things in life it’s only a fail if you don’t learn and grow from it, so we learned and we grew.

We had been hearing about this idea of people eating and recording themselves in the process and we thought that was just about the silliest thing we had ever heard about. One of our friends, Real Icee suggested that we make videos about food. Then our friend Robert Guzman, with Capizmo Communications, asked us to record a food show at JCI Grill in Katy so we jumped on the opportunity. Then we found out that it had a name – Mukbang. We already had a YouTube channel which was half abandoned so we revived it and changed it’s name to Mukbang Gone Wild, Houston City Beat Style!

What is Mukbang?

As defined by Wikipedia, Mukbang is an online audiovisual show where the host(s) eat too much food or eat their food while interacting with the audience. There are as many styles of Mukbang as there are people. Most of the Mukbang out there are people eating way too much food. As I write this, we have completed our fourth Mukbang. I can attest to how easy it is to eat more than you should!

Another component of Mukbang videos are the use of sound aka “noise”. You will find that most Mukbangers will exaggerate noises to explode everyday sounds like drinking, biting, eating, chewing etc. The capturing of these sounds are made possible by ASMR technology. ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. There are many ASMR videos out there from eating to crushing objects and brushing hair. We have a solid mic that captures sounds from the camera/video but it’s not 100% ASMR.

Where did Mukbang come from?

From the research I’ve done, Mukbang originated in South Korea. According to www.fluentin3months.com, Mukbang is a word created from two words. It comes from Muk-ja (eating) and Band-song (broadcast). It means “eating broadcast”.

Why do people watch Mukbang?

Now that’s a funny question. People watch Mukbang videos because they want to be entertained by seeing people eat way too much food, slurp, talk with their mouths open, etc…and because each Mukbanger brings in their own personality to their channel.

What’s the Mukbang Gone Wild Houston City Beat Style all about?

We can’t answer this fully without telling you about our main platform at HoustonCityBeat.com.

Houston City Beat is an online platform that promotes businesses in the Greater Houston area. You might be wondering how does this relate to Mukbang…one of our niches is restaurants. It so happens that we are restaurant reviewers and we’ve been blessed in being able to develop great relationships with many restauranteurs in the Houston area. It’s our love for the restaurant entrepreneur and great food that led us to create our own version of Mukbang.

Our version of Mukbang is different from what you see out there and that’s how we want to keep it. Everyone brings their own version of greatness to the creative process. How are we different than other Mukbangers? You won’t find us eating a ton of food and all of our videos are done on location when possible. On occasion we do bring a special guest to join us and you will see our friendly back and forth banter. We hope you get inspired to visit the restaurants, cafes, food trucks and more which we visit.

In full disclosure, you won’t find us sitting down for a Mukbang at a place which we don’t like…if we are there it’s because it’s worthy of sharing!

Don’t forget to subscribe to the Mukbang Gone Wild Channel and click on the  notifications button so you’ll see when we post next.

Thank Ya For Reading and come back often to see the next weekly video.
