Meet Sydney C. | Artist , Instructor, Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney C. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, how do you think about risk?
In this life, I’m all about taking risk. Yes, the thought of taking one can be is scary at first but I believe some of your biggest achievements or moments happens when you do! Whether it’s taking a new job, quitting a job, starting a family or business you never know what the outcome maybe. Taking risk has played a major role in my life and career I opened my business during the pandemic and a year after having my first child.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to describe a lot of my art as abstract. Something I believe that sets me apart from others is I’m willing to try different style art. I like to challenge myself to step out my comfort zone and everyday work. Im most proud of the growth that I have shown over the years with my art and the future I see for myself. Moving to Houston four years ago I knew I wanted to own a art gallery but at the time it just sounded good, ya know , more like a life dream vs a dream I can touch. I had a major loss in my life and growing up I knew her biggest dream was for me to chase my art. After Valerie passed I found out she actually kept one of my journal from high school that was filled with my drawings. The same year she passed I had my daughter Nova and I told myself I have no choice but to chase every talent God sent me. There were many challenges along the way, I mean from months having no commission and thinking to myself how I was just setting myself up for failure. Starting off I had no structure so I was losing so much sleep, I struggled with work, life, a toddler and full Time job. Some lessons I learned along the way is embrace every chapter, every mistake and every failure. I’ve learned to pace myself through this journey, it my race. I want the world to know my brand is for every child that looked at a dream and thought It was too big….it’s possible. Just take that risk

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First place my shop! Canvas Creations located Downtown Houston. So of course that will be our first stop, We would check out some of my favorite happy hour spots that has good music and good food The Address, Prospect Park, Glorias and Grooves. I’m a scenery girl I would take my Bestfriend to sight seeing, I absolutely love Old Harrisburg, I would take them to visit space center, Galveston for a day to relax. It’s so hard to figure what to eat in Houston because there’s so many places to eat but we would go to the Burger Joint, The Breakfast Klub, Turkey Leg Hut, Lost & Found or my top favorite The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my friends and family. I can’t even describe the gratitude I have for them! They have been in my corner from the very beginning. I remember I would call some of my friends in the middle of the night just to tell them my thoughts, goals or simply what my plan was to achieve my next goal. The support my family and friends have shown have been beyond one can imagine, I’m beyond grateful for them!
