Meet Floyd Mendoza | Multi-Media Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Floyd Mendoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Floyd, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risk has played a major role in the success I’ve experienced this far. Although it may seem scary at first, I knew that if I continued to play life safe I would never experience it to the fullest. In addition, I found it to be almost a strength when you fully grasp the concept.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The art I create is very personal to me. It was and still is an escape from the reality of this world. What sets me apart from other artists is how I use multiple mediums from large scale murals to canvases and everything in between. In addition what sets me apart is the inspiration behind my work. It’s based from my city and culture I was raised in. How I got to where I am today is a long story but actually started whenever the pandemic began. I was working railroad construction at the age of 22 and work had slowed down dramatically and I needed extra money to provide for me and my wife. That’s when I began to sell and take commissions for paintings. I built a decent clientele over the course of those months. Meanwhile I was on my third job that same year and I was let go in February of 2021. Frustrated, I decided I would take a gamble on myself and jump into doing art on a full time basis. I haven’t looked back since. I’ve learned so many lessons and still am til this day however majority of lessons are deprived from my mistakes and also I learned to be very selective on where you get advice from. I want the world to know me for not just being a creative but for being a voice for those who aren’t heard. I’ve built my brand on that art is not just a cool hobby but has become a responsibility to not only those we care about but for our communities and everyone in it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
That’s a great question. I would first take them to the Eado side of houston. There’s so much art and awesome food all within walking distance. From truck yard, Cabo’s, and also eight wonder bar. I would then recommend attend an Astros game the environment is the best there is. In addition the heights area is a great place if you’re a foody person and love a good time. My favorite place is Presslys , and also recommend to attend Tokyo Joes they just opened up and already drawing attention The list is endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The list is too long to mention everyone but I definitely owe a lot to my wife. She was the first person to really believe I could make a name for myself even when it seemed such a far fetched plan. Second would love to thank my parents for giving me the best life they could with what little we had at the time. I have to mention the Houston Art community. There’s so many artist here in the city that have poured into me and have paved the way for a young artist like myself to thrive. Last but not least I’d like to thank God for the opportunities he’s brought me up to this point.
