Meet Amit Mehta | Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amit Mehta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amit, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk and reward are directly proportional. Higher the risks, higher the chances of rewards. From childhood, i took risks with the intention to prove to myself no one else. For example, I jumped from 6 ft wall to see I can survive, i was never good at soccer so challenged myself to learn it and become the best. My best learning over the years has been, when you are young, wild and crazy you should take highest amount of risks as you are only concerned with yourself BUT when you get older the risk taking relatively decreases as you have to worry about others as well not just yourself. like wife, kids etc.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others: First my curious nature, i didn’t know anyone in Silicon Valley but went there stayed in Airbnb, attended countless meet ups to learn how Silicon valley builds success software companies, This helped me build the same in Houston, which lacks software eco system like silicon valley. Second, my never give up attitude, i was in school soccer team, I injured my right leg, was told to rest for a season, I learnt how to play with left foot to re-enter the team, I scored Zero in Mathematics in pre exams but topped in the main exams, I failed twice while building my company, only to rebuilt it 3rd time in a row etc. It was never easy, I am firm believer you have to earn PhD in failure before you can earn bachelors in success. So failing is a key ingredient which also sets me apart. I am never afraid to fail, i believe you fast fail and learn. I overcome challenges by reading about others, drawing examples from my past life where I fought adversities and still won. for example when the market crashed, i drew example of living on pennies a decade back and fighting thru painful times to become succcessful, i used those lessons to help me fight thru current times and more..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I have friend’s visiting I will 1) Take them to a local cafes in the area which are hole in the walls with lots of brilliant art work or something authentic which is worth remembering; 2)i would take them to a outdoor place in the area which is majestic, has its charm and something they wont forget for years 3) go for long walks and discover new areas with them which are new to me as well 4) Invite local friends, or meet local strangers along the above journey so we can exchange ideas over beers/drinks and learn more about them.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, in general there is no elevator to success, you have to take the steps. In my journey, on step 1 i would like to thank my family who taught me to be a fighter and never give up. Step 2: i would thank Bill Gates/Steve Jobs who made such a difference in others live thru their innovations. Step 3: the kids in Zambia (Africa) where I lived during my childhood and volunteered, they showed me as orphans their positive spirit, their energy which helped me stay grounded, Step 4: Harvard business reviews which became core to my experimenting and fast fail approach as I had no mentors in the business world Step 5: Inspirational stories of Walt disney, M. Jordan and countless others who showed again and again if you double the rate of failures, you increase the rate of success.
