Mark Appel and the Astros
I recall that he was our no. pick and we were picking no. 1. I also recall that his parents were quite involved and that they were either holding out for, or got signed for, a lot of money for the day. I recall a kind of quiet period and then it turned out that, as part of the deal and price, he agreed to a thorough physical. A specialist found he had a tendon that was too small/narrow/ in his elbow and the doc believed he could not stand the strain of being a starter in MLB. Their non pitcher picks in the time frame were Springer, Correa and Bregman. Their other pitcher pick was Brady Aiken. Clearly, at least for them, pitchers are best obtained in favorable trades.
