Mardi Gras Galveston

I’ve never been and am interested in checking it out this year. Any advice on where to park, where to go, what to expect, etc. I always assumed it was a free event but the website has tickets for sale. Should I buy a ticket on their website or should I just show up and walk around. What days/times are usually the best time to go?
