Lubys update, post sale

Well as most people should know, Lubys almost totally closed down last year, and only a last minute buy out by one of the former partners saved it.

Decided to try it today to see what, if anything changed. Short answer : not much.

Ambiance: the same. Still has workers helping old people to their seats, cleaning up, and refilling drinks.

Food: pretty much what it was before. I had chicken fried steak, fried okra, and mashed potatoes with cornbread. The CFS was good, not great. Too much breading sinking into the splits in the overpounded meat, so that pn some bites you got was tasted like soggy stuffing. Pretty much like it was before. The taters were good. The fried okra was rattling around in loose breading, and cool. The cornbread was a bit dry, but I recall they've always been like that. The salads are now proportioned in clamshell packs. They still have the big fish squares. Etc.

Drink: I had iced tea. Hard to screw that up. The Meyerland location used to serve the tea in a tap from the kitchen. Now it's in the metal containers you see at most fast food joints.

Cost: it's gone up a little. There's a note from the CEO at the start of the line stating that prices have gone up about 9% due to the supply costs going up (like chicken 30%, packaging, etc). My food platter was priced at 11.59. My fountain tea was $2.89. Bonus: they now offer a 25% discount for vets, bit apparently only on food, not drink. Brought my platter down to $8.69, so I basically got the price of the drink off.

Verdict: worth an occasional visit if you have a favorite.
