Looking for a Keto/Carnivore friendly doctor.
My main question is… is there a keto friendly or carnivore friendly doctor or nurse practitioner who is not going to try to push statins on me? Preferably on the Northwest side of town but any leads help. I am looking for someone who can do my yearly bloodwork and who I can go to if I get the flu or have other routine health issues to list as a primary doctor.
Here's the background information:
A while back I had to fire my primary doctor because he was very verbally abusive to me.
I had decided to try a carnivore diet and when I was on it, I lost 80 lbs. My scalp psoriasis went mostly away, the lichen planus in my mouth went away, my gums were a lot healthier, and I was able to avoid trace gluten so I didn't have any celiac symptoms and I overall felt better.
I went in to see my primary at the time and he said "Wow you're doing so great, you're so much healthier, keep doing what you're doing!" I had told him I was on keto which is technically true, carnivore is a ketogenic diet. I didn't want to say carnivore in case he freaked out. As it turns out my fear of his freakout was well founded.
He seemed really happy and proud of me for losing so much weight and overall being so much healthier.
Then we did my bloodwork. Almost everything was awesome, the triglycerides were perfect, blood sugar perfect, etc. I was happy with it.
However I had "high" cholesterol. He wanted to put me on a statin. I didn't want to be on a statin because of everything I've learned about them and also about cholesterol in the context of a low carb diet.
I asked for an advanced lipid panel. It came back as "optimal pattern". So basically the large to small particle ratio was exactly perfect. This wasn't good enough for him, he still insisted that it was "high" and demanded that I get on a statin.
When I refused, and explained that I didn't want to suffer from certain side effects of statins (like diminishing CoQ10, possible higher risk of dementia, muscle aches, etc.) he absolutely lost his temper and started screaming and screeching at me. He told me I could have a heart attack if I wanted to. He told me I could die if I wanted to.
This was so horrible. I had been one of his early patients and had helped to build his practice. It really made me wonder if he got some kind of kickback for prescribing statins as he had Pharma stickers all over his office for various medicines.
He asked me why I even bothered taking my blood pressure medicines.
He was furious with me when I told him my goal was to be healthy without the need for prescription medicines and that while I was taking that as long as I needed to, that I wanted to eventually get off those too. I explained I took them because I knew high blood pressure was directly damaging whereas I didn't see that as true for cholesterol.
His temper tantrum and abusive screaming made me realize that, even though he didn't fire me as a patient, that I could no longer see him anymore.
I had a calcium score and a blood flow test done at Houston Methodist not long afterward and it came up clean. I have no blockages or plaques at all and blood flow to all four extremities was completely normal.
I did find a low carb friendly nurse practitioner but she moved out of the family practice she was working in down to the complete other side of town to work at a Minute Clinic and I don't feel like I can justify driving that far. I live near Cypress and she's all the way down close to NASA now.
The only reason I signed up with my current family practice was to see her. Now that she's gone I don't really want to keep going to the same far away clinic. The staff there even have my name spelled wrong. Literally the only reason I went to them was to see her.
I'm hoping to find something on this side of town.
