<long> Is my apartment complex in the wrong for this? Do I have any recourse for this?
Hey everyone,
I wanted some Houston specific advice as I am renting an apartment inside the loop. Basically, what happened is that I rented a private garage at my apartment complex for the sole purpose of charging my electric car (management was verbally aware of this). It does not require anymore current or voltage than a regular household outlet can provide and thus not require any specialized equipment whatsoever. I know this because I charged my car out of a regular outlet for years in my previous place in Katy.
However, when I received the private garage at my current place, the outlet was never able to provide sustained power and I made multiple maintenance requests to address the issue. Still, the apartment complex was never able to fix the issue. I kinda gave up arguing with them about as I thought maybe something was wrong about my car or I didn't inspect the power capabilities of the outlet in my rented garage closely enough before signing the garage lease. I just let it go and charged my car at external charging points. But, in early January of this year, I saw the security charging their golf carts in another garage. I know golf carts can also charge out a regular outlet like my car, and thought if they can do it, why can't I in my garage?
I went back to maintenance and asked for a different garage to see if my car would charge. Of course it worked. I tried yet another garage and it worked as well. I am asking for some sort of discount or compensation because clearly there were other garages that would've met my needs. In classic apartment manager fashion, they are denying all responsibility and gaslighting me into making it seem like my fault. They said that they are not responsible for a working outlet as the garages are ONLY meant for parking. This just sounds like them trying to avoid any sort of loss.
But, the thing is that they just didn't want to properly fix whatever was wrong with my garage. I paid a lot of money for something that didn't even work in full (the electricity in the garage). So, I am asking if there is any legal recourse for me. Because clearly they didn't do their job and they could've just given me another garage from the beginning or fixed my current garage. Would I have a chance in court or would they just win due to some landlord protection laws that I don't know about?
This whole situation is just a huge headache for me as they took my money and never gave me a properly working garage. I hate large apartment complexes so much.
