Where would you recommend an upcoming artist get their feet wet?

I started putting some music together this year and I am really looking forward to performing on stage. I figure an open mic night or something similar would be my best bet but where would I find one?

Are there certain bars or clubs that you know of that put these together on a regular basis? TBH I don’t usually frequent either of those, but I’m trying my best to get out of my shell, connect, and share my music with as many people as possible .

I live on the west side of town but I don’t mind traveling. I just want to perform.
