Living in Houston with just under 35k

Hi, I'm considering relocating to Houston for my graduate studies and will be earning just under $35,000/year. I'm interested in understanding whether this income is sufficient to support myself there. I'm open to living with roommates, but I prioritize residing in a safe area because my current location is extremely secure, and I haven't developed strong "self-protection instincts".
