Living and Commuting in Downtown Houston Without a Car

I’m going to be working in downtown Houston for a few months this summer, and I’d love to hear from locals or anyone familiar with the area.

A few things I’m trying to figure out: 1. How safe is it downtown? I’ll probably be walking around a bit in the evenings and just want to know what to expect. Are there areas I should avoid or things I should be aware of? 2. Good places to live (under $2,000/month): I’m looking for a spot that’s safe, not too far from downtown, and ideally under $2,000/month. Doesn’t have to be super fancy—just comfortable and relatively convenient. 3. Getting around without a car: I won’t have a car with me, so I’m curious how doable it is to rely on public transit or Uber/Lyft. • Is METRO reliable? • Are Ubers super expensive in Houston? • Any alternatives (bikes, scooters, etc.) that people actually use?

Any tips or insights about living in Houston for a short-term stay would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!
