Let’s compare Mills to other QBs and my take on why we shouldn’t plan on drafting a new QB for a while.
Mills has had 4 starts. So let’s look at other QBs when they started for some perspective.
Now, I’m not saying Mills can be the next Brady, but let’s start there. In 2002 Brady had a 63% completion rate. 18TDs to 12 INTs. In the first 2 games he was under a 60% completion rate and threw NO pass TDs. It wasn’t until his 3rd start where he actually even threw a TD. The second game he started he threw for a whopping 86 yards and a 50% competition rate. Sound familiar?
The difference is Brady had a great supporting cast – including coaches.
For those that want to say Brady is a one-off, in Russell Wilson’s first game he had a completion rate of 52% and threw 1 TD and 1 INT. He had a “breakout” game in his 2nd start for a 75% competition rate with 1 TD and 150 yards and dropped back to a 47% competition rate in his 3rd game. In his 4th game he had 3 INTs and no pass TDs.
Again, sound familiar?
People keep judging Mills on just a few starts. But when you compare him to other QBs that are now considered great – they started that way too.
In Mills very first start he threw for 168 yards and he threw a pass TD with a completion rate of 68%. It’s crazy to say this guy doesn’t have it this early on. Besides, what do we have to lose? The dude has started in just 4 games.
Mahomes sat for a year and in his 4th game he had a 62% completion rate with only 1 pass TD. In the very next game he had 2INTs and no pass TDs and his completion rate dropped to 58%.
Stop shitting on Mills. Give the dude a season to prove himself. He’s a rookie with very little college experience, a mediocre coaching staff, very few weapons and a leaky OLINE without the help of a good run game like Brady, Wilson and Mahomes had.
Do you think any other QB we draft would honestly do much better with what we have? No. We need to focus on drafting defensive positions, offensive line positions, find a couple of aggressive RBs (either trade or FA) and to make more aggressive play calls – which probably means getting rid of Tim Kelly. No matter who we get, we will suffer if these things are not rectified.
Rant over.
