Lawn / Landscaping Question

I have St. Augustine grass in my backyard and recently had some trenching done to repair a gas line. Now I have an ugly scar through the yard. My question is, should I rely on the existing St. Augustine grass to take it over or do something else since there are so many opportunistic, invasive weeds? TIA!
