Labor Day road trip to South Padre Island?

Labor Day weekend also happens to be my birthday weekend. I was thinking about driving down to South Padre Island and staying 2 nights to celebrate… how bad will the traffic be in the area? Waze says it's about a 5 hour drive on a weekday. Do all routes to the island get backed up like they do for Galveston?
