Kids asking for donation on S. Main & OST. Scam or legit?

Noticed a few kids who look to be high school age or older at the intersection of South Main & Old Spanish Trail & Braesmain near target holding signs saying football jersey donations. Yesterday they came up to my window and I just waved and shook my head. Then the kid proceeded to cuss and walk off.

So kind of makes me lean towards 2 kids/teens trying to make quick cash. Anyone else have any thoughts? Just another reason I never give money to anyone on the streets, you never know if it’s legit or not.
