It’s going to be cold❄️ what’s the best way to help people???
Ok, whether we get a gazillion inches of snow or just some sleet, the weather is going to suck over the next 5-6 days. I can bitch, but also I know for my fellow Houstonians who are unhoused or don’t have access to warmth/shelter it can not only suck but be deadly.
Genuinely, I have a bunch of coats and blankets I would like to donate. I have a tent also sitting around. I’ve driven around in nasty winter conditions in the past with those big boxes of coffee from Starbucks to give to people. These are things I’m thinking about doing this weekend!
I would love your thoughts: is it worthwhile to offer to hand these out to people or is there an organization who is taking donations? Is there something else that people would appreciate? Basically, what’s the best use of my time/effort if I want to try to do something to help?
Yes- I know there are shelters! I also know they fill up and might have strings attached and just might not be feasible for every person in their situation. I also know I’m not going to solve huge systemic problems with this! I also remember being in the Army 20 odd years ago and how miserable I was when we would be in the field for weeks at a time in subzero temps.
Tl;dr what is the best way to help people over the weekend who might have to go through the next few days of bad weather without a warm place to stay?
Love, The kind of girl who grew up in Texas and cracks her puffy jackets out when the weather drops below 60F
