Is the San Jacinto River “lake” safe to swim?

I know cancer causing chemicals were dumped in the river in the 1960s, and 12 years ago clean up efforts started to make the river safer. But I can’t find any recent info on if the river is safer to swim in yet.

We are renting a vacation property on the river and am concerned about the kids. Am I being overreactive? Or do people actually avoid swimming in the river?
