Is it a bad idea to buy a Townhouse in Houston?
Little background, despite it being a bad time to buy a house in the area with home prices and interest rates being high, SO and I are tired of renting and have been house hunting.
Lot of the townhouses that look decent on paper and relatively affordable inside the beltway end up showing signs of foundation cracks despite the house being less than 20 years old. I understand that there’s soil settling issue in the area and some of the problems can be offset with “watering” your foundation in the hotter months. Are “matchstick” style townhouses just doomed to fail in 50 years because of the unconsolidated surface soil in the area or is this more of a result of rapid development and bad construction?
