Is Cuney Homes safe?

I'm staying in Houston this summer to take on a position as a research intern with a doctor. The doctor does a preventive care project in Cuney Homes in third ward. I wanted to ask how safe it is to be at Cuney Homes during the daytime? I've heard and read accounts of the negative reputation it's had as a dangerous area in Houston, what with the shootings, muggings, thefts, etc. that have gone on over there. But the doctor's team says it's safer there now b/c there's increased security from UH and TSU which have expanded into third ward. Any thoughts are appreciated.
