In Houston for the summer, any tips?

I’m a college student who got a full time internship this summer in Houston. I’m from a smallish town and don’t have much experience with cities beyond brief trips for sports or fun. I think I’m staying in a family friends place sorta near the Galleria. Any tips for making life/ my stay better?
